Sermon: James 2 – Justification by works and saving faith

I’ve been doing a homiletics class over the last seven or eight weeks. I’ve preached twice during it and have received valueable feedback both times. I’m grateful for the opportunity to hone my speaking ability and how I handle the word of God.

While the first sermon wasn’t worth putting up here, the second one was better, so here it is. The title is “Justification by works is saving faith” and it is based on James 2:21–26.

Sermon: Baptism

Colossians 1 – the transforming gospel

Our need to see our sin

In my last post I mentioned that we need to have a greater understanding of our own sin and depravity. Its only when we see this that we will see our need for salvation, but it also will illuminate the depth of Gods grace and may lead us to a deeper worship of God. Read more »

We have just finished preaching thematically through proverbs. I was fortunate enough to be able to participate in this series, and was asked to speak on Intellectual Wisdom.  For the record other sermons in the series include practical wisdom, workplace wisdom, relationship wisdom, etc. Read more »

John 16

A couple of months ago, I got to speak on John 16 in our congregation.  While it is possible to preach on the whole chapter, I generally prefer to select a smaller selection from the chapter and preach on that. Read more »

Psalm 32

A few months ago, I began memorizing scripture – I started with Psalm 32.  Today, I had the opportunity to take what I’ve learned from memorizing and meditating on this Psalm and share it in a sermon. Read more »

David, Bathsheba and adultery

The story of David and Bathsheba is well known, but not known well enough.  We will often read it and not really check our own hearts as we ought and so we dont always take out everything that we can. Read more »

Leadership starts with you

Last weekend I spoke on leadership. The main point that I wanted everyone to understand was that while we might not all be called to leadership positions at work, church or even home, we are all called to display the characteristics of leadership. Read more »
